“Every material carries a geography. Coal simply remembers deeper than most.”
Coal is usually understood as fuel—anonymous, consumed, destined to disappear. BROKAT asks the opposite question: what if the material most associated with industry could become an object of permanence?
Founded in Katowice, in the heart of Upper Silesia, BROKAT transforms fragments of millions-year-old coal into contemporary jewellery. Rather than treating coal as a relic of extraction, the studio repositions it as a precious material whose value lies not in rarity but in memory.
Every polished fragment preserves the geological history of the region while quietly carrying its industrial identity into everyday life.
What began as a search for an authentic Silesian gift has evolved into a practice where design, craftsmanship and local heritage intersect. Each piece becomes both ornament and archive—small enough to wear, yet carrying centuries beneath its surface.
Mezalians
Named after the Polish word for an unexpected union, Mezalians explores the meeting of opposites. Rough coal is paired with polished silver, industrial heritage with contemporary elegance, permanence with everyday wear. The collection embraces contrast rather than resolving it, allowing both materials to retain their distinct identities.
Literally meaning “Half and Half,” this collection is built around duality. Jewellery becomes a quiet metaphor for relationships, balance and shared identity. Coal, divided into complementary forms, reminds us that two distinct parts can belong to the same origin while remaining complete in themselves.
Classic Collection
The studio’s most restrained series reveals the material with minimal intervention. Hearts, circles and geometric forms reduce jewellery to its essentials, allowing the deep matte black of the coal itself to become the defining visual element. It is a collection where simplicity gives geological time room to speak.

Many regions possess symbols. Few possess a material as inseparable from their identity as Silesia’s coal. BROKAT refuses to let that history disappear with the mines. Instead, it transforms the substance that powered an industrial age into objects intended to endure for generations. The result is jewellery that is simultaneously contemporary and ancient—a small fragment of the earth carrying over three hundred million years of memory, worn not as nostalgia, but as quiet pride.
